Almost two decades ago, we traveled to the Owens Valley town of Independence where we visited with Mary DeDecker and her husband, Paul in their home. There, Mary signed several copies of<em>Death Valley to Yosemite</em> for us while telling about the time she got her Jeep stuck on a high road in the Panamint Mountains, in a snowstorm, and had to walk out.
